JUNIORS CATEGORIES

Monarch Juniors is a great way for those under 21 to become more involved and educated in conserving the environment and protecting wildlife.

 

Juniors are given a set of activities to complete and earn badges. Those that complete all of their tasks will be eligible to become the Junior Ambassador for the following year, and all Juniors will be recognized at our live event!

Fees for Juniors are $175, and include their crown, sash, backpack, notebook, t-shirt, and pin. All 25 badges they can earn are included in this price.

There are six (6) categories that Juniors can complete. Each category has three (3) activities and one (1) bonus activity. The first three (3) activities must be completed in order to get credit for the bonus. 

1) Water Conservation

  • What does "conservation" mean, and why is it important?

  • Learn about how the water that comes out of the taps gets to you.

  • What conservation challenge does your local area face? How can you help?

  • Bonus: Find five (5) ways to reduce water usage around your house.

2) Plastics Pollution

  • What s the impact of plastics pollution in our rivers, lakes, and oceans?
  • How do these plastics impact wildlife?
  • What are the top three (3) single-use plastics in your home? How can you reduce using them?
  • Bonus: Help your guardian sort the recycling. Which plastics can be recycled, and which ones can't?

3) Wildlife

  • Learn about how many species of local wildlife live in the water. How many of those are endangered?
  • Make a list of reasons why these animals might be in danger.
  • What can you do to help these animal?
  • Bonus: Find out if there's a local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation center near you. Find out what animals they have, and why they're there.

4) Water Safety

  • Do you know how to keep yourself, your friends, your family, and your pets safe in and around water?
  • Are you able to recognize the signs that someone cannot swim, and may be in danger?
  • What are some of the similarities and differences between swim safety and boat safety?
  • Bonus: Take a swimming lesson or water safety course.

5) Local Cleanup

  • Identify your local waterways.
  • What challenges are there to keep your community waters clean?
  • Do all of your local parks have trash cans? If not, write a letter to your local legislature.
  • Bonus: Adopt a road or highway in your area.

6) Climate/Weather

  • What is climate change?
  • How has it impacted your local region?
  • Research weather patterns now vs. 50 years ago. What changes do you see in temperature, storms, flooding, and fire?
  • Bonus: Join a children's climate charity group.
